Martin Jarrold Chief of International Programme Development GVF
0930 Session 1
Applications Evolution and 21st Century Dynamics in Oil & Gas Networking Communications
The opening conference session will provide an introductory foundation for the remainder of the programme, and will provide an overall appraisal of the development of digital applications that are central to the mission-critical networking requirements of the various exploration and production segments of the oil & gas sector, together with a overview of the dynamics of current communications technology available to support those applications.
Arnaud Feletin Project Manager, Global Remote Communications Baker Hughes International
Kenny Grant Sales Manager EMEA Caprock Communications

1030 Session 2
Resilience & Security in “Enabling the Digital Oilfield”
The experts in this panel session will explain precisely what is meant by the phrase “enabling the digital oilfield”. Does it mean exactly the same thing throughout the oil & gas sector? Is there universal agreement on a shared definition? If so, the panellists will set-out, root-and-branch, a full explanation of all that the phrase encompasses. And, if not, they will set-out the common – and not so common – variations in meaning. Implicit in the “enabling of the digital oilfield” is the imperative requirement for systems resilience and data security, and the members of this panel will also define the exact nature of these requirements.

1200 Session 3
Developing Advanced Communications Infrastructures to Realise the “Digital Oilfield”
In this session the panellists will offer their analyses of today’s communications product and service environment within which the players in the solutions vendor community compete to satisfy the efficiency and data risk-management needs of the buyers of Digital Oilfield ICT solutions in the E & P environment. In addition, as hard to reach oil & gas reserves – increasingly in offshore and deepwater locations – become economically more viable in the context of rising energy demand and higher prices, what lessons from the Digital Oilfield environment can be usefully, and cost-effectively, applied cross the global oil & gas patch.

1240 Session 4
Networking Technologies & Topologies 1: From Narrowband SCADA & Asset Tracking to Broadband Satellite Communications in the Oil & Gas Patch
In today’s oil & gas environment voice, data and many higher bandwidth applications must flow freely between remote sites and many other points in companies’ networks in order to facilitate important and timely decisions. The design of reliable, scalable and cost-effective multi-application networks, together with the leverage of the latest technologies, is now absolutely central to the Quality of Service-maximised delivery of solutions in increasingly demanding environments. For many years VSAT-based communications systems have been of pivotal importance in the servicing of narrow-bandwidth SCADA-type applications, and now such satellite-based systems are key to the successful deployment of new broadband-based applications with a foundation in the IP environment. On this panel both oil & gas end-users and satcoms solutions providers will have an opportunity to put forward their respective positions and to jointly identify exactly how greater satellite bandwidth supply and cost-effectiveness can be realised in the form of improved bandwidth optimisation and oil & gas sector-specific customisation techniques.

1450 Session 5 – Presentation Session The Application of Video in the Virtual Collaborative Environment
The adoption of IP in the Digital Oilfield enables the highly advantageous use of innovative video technology to develop the 'Virtual Oil Company', driving collaboration & knowledge management, remote maintenance and inspection, unmanned offshore operations and safety and security. In this extended presentation, Cisco Systems will outline the potential role and benefits of embedding video into oil & gas company strategy, identifying the requirements for intelligent digital media distribution, search and mobility, thus positioning the importance of a video strategy and describing the key technology areas required. 1550 Session 6
Networking Technologies & Topologies 2: Evolving Commercial Applications to the Satellite Environment
Following-on from the theme of Session 5, it would seem that the developers of business mission-critical applications, including those employed in the unique operating environments of the oil & gas industry (e.g., such as SAP, CITRIX, etc) and many other naturally hostile regions, work very much within a “fibre frame of reference” in the broadband world. As this panel will investigate, for the oil & gas industry the evolution in the operating parameters of such applications to render them compatible with the high latency environment of VSAT would introduce an entirely new business model to radically offset the perceived potential advantages of, and create a barrier to entry for, an offshore fibre infrastructure.

1700 Session 7
First Mile/Last Mile Networking Solution Innovations: Technology Hybrids & the Digital Oilfield Applications Solution
ICT solutions buyers in the oil & gas sector are interested in the applications-supporting cost-effectiveness of the solutions they need rather than the details of the constituent technology platforms that contribute the solution, and therefore they tend to be technology agnostic. Yet, the physical circumstances of oil & gas resource exploitation, and the industry requirement to link multiple sites – for example, inland and offshore, well-head and site office, or CVE and corporate HQ – necessitate that companies in the sector buy wide area networking services which utilise various combinations of wireline, terrestrial wireless, and satellite platforms. Therefore, it is incumbent on communications industry operators and service providers to ensure that their offerings to the industry continue to provide multi-platform, multiple technology, hybridised solutions to meet the complex and extensive voice, data, and video applications needs of this vertical environment. This panel will investigate and explain how this is being achieved, and explore what more needs to be done.
