Setting Out the HTS Roundtable Context
Over the next few years, more HTS capacity than ever imagined possible will be driving huge growth in a variety of market sectors including Maritime, Enterprise, Video & Data Services, Consumer Broadband, Connected Aircraft, Road & Rail, Smart Cities & Highways . . . and on and on it goes. The HTS London 2017 Roundtable: Enabling a Brave New World, will facilitate an in-depth exploration of the drivers and trends behind this massive growth potential applied to the aforementioned - and who knows what else is around the corner?
This exploration will extend to evaluating the opportunities arising from a host of new applications that are being delivered into new market sectors, including into the communications on the move (COTM) ecosystem, applications are being enabled through the deployment of more-highly bandwidth efficient networks that use the advanced in-orbit technologies of existing and planned HTS systems, together with planned future constellations of hundreds of non-geostationary (NGSO-HTS) global communications satellites.
Growth, Growth, and Guess What? More Growth
Planned investment by the 30 satellite operators of HTS systems has reached almost US$19billion. The last ten years have seen 36 launches of GEO-HTS systems, with another 100, or so, GEO-HTS systems planned for launch between 2017 and 2025.
The period 2015-16 saw a relatively low net increase of HTS supply, but this is projected to grow to nearly 2,000 Gbps by 2018, and nearly 3,600 Gbps by 2020.
This rapid growth is to be overshadowed by the emergence of NGSO constellations, projects that promise massive volumes of capacity supply, low latency and global (or near-global) coverage. NGSO-HTS projects such as the continued expansion of O3b in MEO, and OneWeb, SpaceX, Telesat and LeoSat in LEO would combine to add over of 40 Tbps of capacity.
Total HTS capacity lease revenues are forecast to reach more than US$6billion by 2025, generating over US$36billion in aggregate revenues over the period. (Figures sourced from Euroconsult.)
Transforming the Value Proposition
With HTS now delivering connectivity to millions of users at subscription rates that transform the broadband value proposition and the strategic connectivity plan, and as the NGSO-HTS constellations (a.k.a. ‘mega-LEOs’) prepare for launches on a scale never before seen, HTS companies are already extending their services into nearly every operating environment. On planes, trains and ships, and in cities, villages and living rooms, the full spectrum of enterprises – and now consumers – are taking advantage of applications that require new definitions of “access”.
Accelerating Satellite Broadband
The Roundtable sessions will explore the satellite broadband market, present & future, from the viewpoint that as global data demand grows (currently at C, Ku and Ka bands, but potentially also including Q and V bands in the future), HTS has already started providing the ability to significantly accelerate the use of satellite broadband, addressing user requirements for the multi-service networks of the Internet, and the environment of applications and service in the Cloud, and asking, “What does this opportunity really promise at the market level, for providers and users?”
Operator Offerings… Now & on the Horizon
Other sessions will offer a broad overview of exactly what high throughput satellite operators are already providing, or planning and preparing to provide, and will ask such questions as: “Are operator offerings essentially the same?” | “Is all high throughput alike?” | “How are regional market variations being reflected in the offerings which comprise regional operator initiatives?” | “Which operators are taking only the Ka band route to new services delivery, and which are developing multiband service strategies in their HTS play?” | “Where are hybrid technology solutions to be positioned?” | “Are the operators forging into direct competition with their own solution re-seller customers?”
The Role of the VARs/Providers
Additional programme content will examine HTS applications in detail, including issues related to deployment, and the evolving role of the value added reseller (VAR) in the equipment and service supply chain. Incorporated in this the Roundtable will explore the varying requirements of mobile environments on land and at sea, aspects of the latest advanced broadcast environment, rural telecommunications, and the fact that provision of HTS-based applications brings a wealth of opportunity for innovative supply to meet emerging demand. Questions to be addressed will include: “How are such high demand applications markets as PSTN infrastructure extension/telco trunking, broadband Internet access, and mobile terrestrial backhaul for GSM & 3G to LTE & 4G on planes, trains & ships to be satisfied?”
Cyber Security Dynamics
The Roundtable programme will also look at issues of Cyber Security. As the number of HTS launches continues to grow we will ask the question “Do HTS solutions represent a stronger defence against cyber-attacks, or are they a point of vulnerability?”
GEO-HTS, MEOs and the Mega-LEOs
“How will the GEO-HTS and mega-LEO services compete… or will they be complementary?” “How will they be differentiated and priced?” “How will they be contracted and regulated?” “How are the new constellations going to be launched?” “How will the systems satisfy end-user requirements?” “Who will come out on top among the satellite operators, the manufacturers, integrators, network licensees and, ultimately, the users amongst the wireless operators, maritime & aeronautical interests, oil & gas companies, military, civil government agencies, and the individual consumer.
Building upon eight previous GVF-EMP High-Throughput Satellite Roundtables, held in London & Washington DC, this event will serve as a forum where these trends and these companies will be examined, revealing insights into how this exciting new chapter in satellite communications continues to rewrite the way that applications are delivered.
Across a keynote opening address and four themed interactive panel sessions the Roundtable will offer an exploration of the ongoing evolution in the underpinning business and market economics of HTS, continuing to zoom-in on a range of specific analyses on the HTS ecosystem, including: The changing focus of the operators & evolution in the space segment; Emerging threats and opportunities for re-sellers in the value chain; Technology shifts in the ground segment; and, Mobility as the core revolutionary dynamic in today’s broadband satcoms.
